International School Library Month

October is International School Library Month 2011.  Although October is coming to a close it is not too late to celebrate the school library, the school librarian and their important contribution to learning within the school environment.  Further information may be gained at this link - International School Library Month

In recognition of, and as part of International School Library Month, CCRSB has initiated a new project - The CCRSB Teen Reader's Choice Award. This award, CCRSB's first student driven book award is being facilitated by CCRSB Library Services. Interested students in grades 7-12 will be invited to nominate their favorite book for the award regardless of genre, publication date, origin or format.  The award committee will consider all nominations to create a shortlist of ten books, which will then be made available in each participating CCRSB school library.  Students will be encouraged to read the top ten books and discuss them with their peers both in school and online.  Students will then vote for their choice from the top ten books. All voters will then be invited to an awards ceremony, at which time the winning book will be announced.  For nomination information please contact your school librarian.

Welcome back Students and Teachers

Another school year is upon us at HERH, and I would like to be among the first to welcome you back. Please feel free to ask me for assistance, whether it be books to order, help with researching your assignments or help with your computer problems, etc. I have a strong interest in technology.  Please feel free to bring in your latest electronic devices for me to look at...maybe we can push for greater usage of them..

As for sites of interest, I very highly recommend Ted Talks and Khan Academy.  Ted Talks for interesting, inspiring talks by fascinating people.  Khan Academy consists of thousands of videos providing help in various skills in Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, and History.  The education world has flipped, homework being watching these videos followed by discussion in class. Take a look, tell your teachers! Tell me about great websites you have found and how social media might be better put to use at HERH.

Also, I would like to remind you of Ebsco and Infotrac, electronic databases that are available for your educational needs. They also include many periodicals you might be interested in for your day to day use. Time, Macleans, Sports Illustrated, etc.  For further information feel free to contact me.

Have a great year!!

Back Again

Hi there,

Due to technical difficulties (ie. filtering) I have been absent from this blog for quite a while. I hope to become far more regular in my postings. It has been a busy year in the HERH Library with circulation and classroom usage increasing. Stay posted for updates.
